Beijing Optimizes Break Times for Compulsory Education School Students

Starting from the autumn semester this year, Beijing's compulsory education schools will make an overall coordination and optimization of break times between classes. In principle, a 15-minute break will be implemented during class intervals, known as “a quarter-hour break,” allowing students more sufficient time to go outdoors, which is beneficial for their physical and mental health development.

After the optimization and adjustment, Beijing's compulsory education schools will arrange one 30-minute major break in both the morning and afternoon. The total break time per day should be no less than 90 minutes for primary school students and no less than 105 minutes for junior high school students (schools adopting the 5-4 system can refer to these guidelines when formulating their schedules). Regular high schools may also follow these guidelines, and schools have the autonomy to set their own break schedules.
